IN THE STUDIO: Mike Roe

Little_roeLast Friday brought legend Mike Roe (the 77s, the Lost Dogs) to our humble Aurora recording studio. Mike played an intimate, fans-only show to a room of almost 50. Along with some classics and a couple out-of-the-way covers, Mike played the new-and-forthcoming 77s album for us in its entirety. It's a collection of rootsy spirituals and Americana, a real departure for the band - and a real treat.

If that wasn't enough, opener Noah Riemer (Ticklepenny Corner, Urban Hillbilly Quartet) treated us to a slew of quirky stories, clever ballads and bizarre children's music.

Fans brought an excessive amount of desert to the after-show reception in the studio lounge, and we talked life and music late into the night. Thanks to lo-fidelity for booking and promoting this one, and to everyone who brought the sweet stuff - I'm still trying to unload the extra cookies.

AUDIO Q&A: Recording/Mixing for MP3

(ask a question)          (answer a question)

With all the kids these days listening to MP3s at lower bit rates than CDs, how does that affect the recording process? Also is there one format that is a solid compromise between an MP3 and a wave file?

AUDIO Q&A: Master Levels

(ask a question)          (answer a question)

I've noticed that the most noticeable difference for me between an amateur recording and a professional recording is the volume level. Why is that? Is it possible to get quality levels without mastering?
